Breast Lift
Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a procedure used to raise and reshape sagging breasts. As skin ages, it loses some of its elastic properties, this causes the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness. A breast lift procedure elevates the breast giving them a youthful appearance. Breast lifts are commonly completed in tandem with a breast enlargement (augmentation) surgery. Breast augmentation procedures can be performed with either saline or silicone implants, and Dr. Schreiber will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both implants with you. Dr. Schreiber is devoted to achieving his patients goals as well as their aesthetic desires, while keeping his patients happy and comfortable. Dr. Schreiber received the Patients’ Choice Award from patients who rated Baltimore plastic surgeons.
Reasons for Considering a Breast Lift:
- Raise the breasts because of sagging caused by the effects of gravity and aging.
- Firm the breasts if they have lost their firmness and substance due to pregnancy and breast-feeding.
- Re-align the nipples/areolas if they are pointing to the side or downward.
- Return the natural suppleness that was lost after weight loss.
Breast Lift is a General Procedure
The breast lift procedure typically takes between an hour and a half and three hours. There are various techniques for preforming the procedure, but the most common involves making an anchor-like incision along the underside of the breast. This incision follows along the area where the excess skin will be removed, and this defines how the nipple will be located. After the excess skin has been removed the areola and nipple are moved to a higher position. The skin which surrounds the areola is brought together and down in order to reshape the breast.
Patients with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging may be good candidates for a modified procedure which requires less extensive incisions. An example of a procedure such as this is called the “doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy”. In this procedure concentric circular incisions are made around the areola and a doughnut-shaped piece of skin is removed. Recent breakthroughs in breast lift techniques have resulted in minimal incision techniques as well as procedures that reduce the occurrence of enhanced nipple sensation.
If the patient has opted to have a breast augmentation along with the breast lift, there are two choices which Dr. Schreiber will discuss with you. The implant can either be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or it can be placed under the muscle of the chest wall.
Dr. Jeffrey Schreiber performs a wide variety of cosmetic surgery procedures including breast lifts. The breast lift procedure is preformed at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Maryland as well as at the SurgiCenter of Baltimore in Owings Mills, Maryland. Either of these facilities are easily accessible from Washington D.C., Baltimore City, Annapolis, Towson, Baltimore County, Howard County, Lutherville, and Ruxton.
Recovery Process
In general, the post-operative instructions call for the patient to get plenty of rest and to limit their movement in order to speed up the recovery process, and healing time. Immediately after surgery bandages are applied to aid in the healing process and to limit the movement of the breasts. After the bandages have been removed, the patient will have to wear a special surgical bra for several weeks. Occasionally patients report minor pain associated with the surgery, and this pain can be treated with an oral medication. Complications are rate, but patients can minimize any potential problems by carefully following Dr. Schreiber’s post-operative directions closely.
